Want to jump in? Here's how it works:

1. Everyone can read PlantVillage.

Everyone can read all the content on PlantVillage - we will never require people to log in to read questions and answers.

All content on PlantVillage is available under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License; this means that you are free to share and remix everything you find here, even for commercial purposes, as long as you share the results under the same license.

This means that any content on PlantVillage will remain free and open access - for ever.

2. Voting by the community allows you to just read the best & skip the rest.

Perhaps the most annoying aspect of regular forums is that you have to read through all the noise until you find the answer you were looking for, wasting precious time.

PlantVillage eliminates this problem by community member voting. The best answers get upvoted by community members like you, and the best answer automatically makes it to top where you can easily find it.

This community-based sorting allows you to quickly find the best answers in no time.

3. User registration protects the community from spam.

If you would like to ask a question, answer a question, or add a comment, we'll ask you to register as a user. It's a very smooth process, and it protects the community from spam.

We'll never share your email address with anyone. Period.

4. You earn points when others value your contributions.

The community can vote on your contributions that you make as a registered user, and these votes will be reflected in your score.

Your score will increase when your answers and questions are upvoted by other community members. It's a democratic way of rewarding the most helpful community members.

Your high score demonstrates that the community trusts you and values your contributions.

5. As your reputation grows, you'll get to do more.

A high score doesn't just give you bragging rights - as your score grows, you'll get more privileges to do various things around the website. For example, once your score reaches 5 points, you've earned the privilege of up-voting other users' contributions. Another 15 points, and you earn the right to down vote. And so on.

The more points you earn, the more we put the fate of the site in your hands - you'll get to make the decisions about the future of PlantVillage.

PlantVillage is a project initiated by Marcel Salathé and David Hughes, both biologists at Penn State University. In addition, Lindsay McMenemy and Brian Lambert are on the PlantVillage team. The project is currently funded by a generous grant from the Huck Institutes of Life Sciences.
